Mkokotoni Fish Market Tour
On the west coast of the island, about 21km south of Nungwi, Mkokotoni is a lively fishing village. Although there’s no accommodation here, it’s worth a short tour to taste some of the rural atmosphere and vibrant village life.
From the relaxing beach in front of your Hotel you can see each morning fishing boats sailing through the crystal waters of the ocean. On this trip you will see the variety of fish caught by Zanzibar’s fishermen. The bustling market, where local people buy and sell all manner of fresh seafood, is crowded, noisy and full of energy.
You will then be taken to watch the old process used by the blacksmiths to forge red hot metal into nails for their dhow construction and to visit a Portuguese ruin dating back to the 15th century when Zanzibar was under Portuguese occupation.
